This letter will attempt to answer questions and concerns about the recent date change for the 2015 Marathon.
Earlier this year, Dance Marathon Directors were approached by members of the executive team from the Detroit Partnership (DP), a non-profit organization at U-M that works to unite Ann Arbor and Detroit through service-learning opportunities. At our fall recruitment activities, DP informed us that their set date for their largest day of service, DP Day, coincided with our intended Marathon date. Both of our organizations do incredibly important work, both on campus and in the southeastern Michigan community at large. In an effort to keep like-minded students and organizations from having to choose between participating in our two amazing causes, Dance Marathon began working towards an alternate date.
In coordination with the Detroit Partnership and the Office of Student Life, Dance Marathon Directors approached the Athletic Department in search of an alternate date. Understanding the gravity of this conflict, the Athletic Department was extremely receptive and moved swiftly to secure another weekend for us to use the Indoor Track Building, shifting resident teams and schedules to accommodate our Marathon on March 14th and 15th. We are incredibly thankful for their help!
With the knowledge that this new date fell close to St. Patrick’s Day, Dance Marathon Directors began talks with the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Association, Wolverine Wellness, PULSE, and Student Life to ensure that the weekend of March 14th and 15th is entirely dedicated to Dance Marathon. Our objective is to establish that our dancers will not have to choose between on-campus activities and standing with us FTK. We are incredibly appreciative of the kindness and flexibility that our partners have demonstrated thus far, and we are excited to continue working together to further incorporate Dance Marathon 2015 into the efforts of our campus community!
As more information is solidified, our membership body will be alerted, and we will take every step to be as transparent as possible. Thank you for your understanding! We look forward to standing with you on March 14th and 15th, 2015!
